Color is an important element in web design because color makes people feel certain ways, often unconsciously. Much like a musical score in a film, color on a website is a direct emotional route to your audience. Color should be used to support the purpose of your website and to communicate who you are instantly. A Medical Design will help you do so.

Examples always help, so we’ll explain. Say you’re an obstetrician—in the business of bringing new life to the world. As a patient, imagine how quickly you’d be turned off if you came across a heavy black and dark red website for a baby doctor. An obstetrician is best served by choosing a soft palette—like pastels in greens, purples, pinks and blues—colors associated with youth, freshness and the softness of a baby’s sumptuous skin.

Dermatologists should consider colors that express freshness and cleanliness and should strive for a look that’s as pure as the driven snow—and the color of it, too. Vibrant blues and aquas, suggesting water, set against a white background works wonderfully to promote the idea of freshness and the feel of clean and vital.

If you’re a heart surgeon, AMD’s advice would be stay away from heavy use of red. It’s likely to call up negative associations of blood and bleeding. An oncologist, on the other hand might want to use some bright red highlights or other bright, cheery colors to express hopefulness and a life-affirming attitude.

Hospitals and medical device manufacturers often want to present a corporate face to the public. Dark, serious colors set against a white background, creating sharp contrast, accomplishes this exceptionally well.

Pediatricians have it best since multiple colors are appropriate for a pediatric practice. We tell them the more color, the merrier, as long as merry colors are chosen. And well they should be. This is no place for dull grays and browns. Children are jolly, playful creatures and a pediatrician’s website should reflect that with happy, cheerful colors.
